What is Fluorite?

Fluorite is a vital industrial mineral made up of calcium and fluorine (CaF2). It is used in numerous chemical, metallurgical, and ceramic processes. Exceptional diaphaneity and color specimens are cut into gems or used to make ornamental objects.

Hydrothermal processes deposit fluorite in veins. It is frequently found in these rocks as a gangue mineral associated with metallic ores. Fluorite can also be found in limestone and dolomite fractures and cavities. It is a very common rock-forming mineral that can be found all over the world. Fluorite is also known as “fluorspar” in the mining industry.


History of Fluorite

Fluorite was named after the Latin word fluere, which means “to flow,” because of its ability to act as a flux between metals. Fluorite was thought to house rainbows due to its rainbow coloring.

Fluorite has been used to sculpt ornate vessels in China for over three centuries. Fluorite was used by the ancient Egyptians to carve scarabs and deity statues. Fluorite was used for decoration by the ancient Romans. Pliny the Elder, an ancient Roman scholar and historian, adored Fluorite and named it one of his favorite minerals.

One of the more spectacular attributes of this stone is called fluorescence, and refers to Fluorite’s ability to glow in the dark after having been exposed to UV light.
